ILUMINADO
Commissioned by the Monterey Museum of Art, Iluminado brings the photographic work of Joe Ramos into lived space—expanding images from 2D surfaces into a three-dimensional environment through real-time participation.
Iluminado is an immersive, interactive installation
built around a curated selection of photographer Joe Ramos’ work,
interpreted through light, shadow, projection, and reflection.
As participants move through the space—casting shadows,
passing through projected light, and encountering
their own reflections alongside the images,
the photographs are experienced from within rather than at a distance.
This physical engagement reveals new layers of the work in real time,
inserting viewers directly into the evolving visual narrative.

01
GROWN WITH THE WIND
Large-scale projected landscapes drift across the wall, tracing the agricultural and coastal edges of Monterey Bay shaped by wind, labor, and time. Accompanied by an audio reflection from Joe Ramos, the work invites stillness as the land unfolds through motion and breath.
02
BENEATH THE SURFACE
Projected photographs by Joe Ramos respond to the silhouettes of visitors’ hands and bodies, revealing hidden image layers beneath the surface. As participants move, shadows activate submerged scenes—uncovering new visual narratives through real-time interaction.

STATION 4
THE STILLPOINT
A sculptural bench cast in resin and embedded with natural materials offers a place to pause within the installation. Positioned to face the Wind Wall, it situates the viewer inside the surrounding works, encouraging reflection as imagery, sound, and movement circulate around the body.
Botanical Reflections
Three-dimensional botanical portraits by Joe Ramos line the exit path, mounted on reflective mylar surfaces that shift with light and movement. As visitors pass, color, form, and reflection change continuously, subtly incorporating the viewer into the work itself.
